Billie Eilish has been photographed in character for the upcoming film adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. Images captured during filming in Toronto show the singer with auburn-brown hair, pearl earrings and clothing inspired by the 1950s.
The production places Eilish in the lead role of Esther Greenwood, a young aspiring writer whose life changes after she accepts an internship at a women’s magazine in New York City. The story follows Esther as she faces growing pressure, questions about her identity and a serious decline in her mental health.
The movie will mark Eilish’s first leading role in a feature film. She previously appeared in the television series Swarm, but The Bell Jar represents a much larger acting commitment.
Sarah Polley is writing and directing the adaptation. Carey Mulligan is set to play Esther’s mother, Mrs. Greenwood, while Connor Storrie has also been connected to the cast.
Plath’s novel was first published in 1963 and remains widely known for its portrayal of depression and the expectations placed on young women. No official release date has been announced.
