If you’ve spent any time in Atlanta, you’ve probably noticed one thing: everything seems to be named Peachtree. Peachtree Street, Peachtree Road, Peachtree Battle Avenue, Peachtree Industrial Boulevard… the list goes on and on. So, why exactly is Atlanta so obsessed with Peachtree?
The answer actually goes back long before Atlanta was even a city.
The name comes from a Muscogee settlement called Standing Peachtree, located near where Peachtree Creek meets the Chattahoochee River. It was an important trading center for the Muscogee people, and the name eventually became connected to the trails that ran through the area.
One of those trails eventually became the route of what we now know as Peachtree Road. During the War of 1812, Fort Peachtree was built near Standing Peachtree, and a road connecting it to another fort in present-day Gwinnett County was constructed in 1814. Parts of that route still exist today.
As Atlanta grew, so did the Peachtree name. Developers and city planners used it for new streets and roads, creating the collection of Peachtree names we have today. According to the Atlanta History Center, there are dozens of streets throughout the metro area with some version of “Peachtree” in their name.
So the next time you’re trying to figure out whether you’re supposed to be on Peachtree Street, Peachtree Road, or one of the other seemingly endless Peachtree streets, just remember: Atlanta’s Peachtree obsession is almost as old as the city itself.
