Boy bands have been around for decades, but every generation seems to get its own version of them. From the matching outfits and choreographed dances of the 90s to the global phenomenon of BTS, boy bands have managed to stay popular while constantly changing.
The 1990s were a huge moment for boy bands. Groups like the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC became some of the biggest names in pop music. Their music was everywhere, their posters covered bedroom walls, and fans had very strong opinions about which member was their favorite. Boy bands weren’t just about the music. They were about the personalities, the choreography, and the connection fans felt with the group.
Then came the 2000s and 2010s. Groups like One Direction brought the boy band back to the center of pop culture, while 5 Seconds of Summer showed that a group could combine the popularity of a boy band with the sound and image of a traditional rock band.
Then there was BTS.
BTS took the idea of a boy band and made it global. The South Korean group became one of the biggest acts in the world, breaking into the U.S. market and eventually earning multiple No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2021, “Butter” spent 10 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1.
What makes boy bands so interesting is how much they’ve changed. The Backstreet Boys and NSYNC had the 90s. One Direction had the 2010s. BTS brought K-pop to an even larger international audience. The sound, style and technology may change, but one thing stays the same: people still love a good boy band.
